How did you get rid of your acne?
I’m 23 and I’ve had moderate acne for 11 years now. I’m tired of it. I’m tired of buying expensive acne kits and creams that promise to get rid of your acne. My skin was clearest when I was on birth control but I can’t take birth control pills anymore due to other health issues. It seems like all acne products are either 2% salicylic acid or 10% benzoyl peroxide. They definitely don’t work! I wash my face every morning with a benzoyl peroxide based cleanser. Twice throughout the day I use facial cleansing cloths to keep the oil away. Then at night, I use a salicylic based cleanser, a toner, and an overnight acne cream. It still doesn’t work. I’m still getting acne and now with the weather being so hot and I’m sweating more, my chest and back are breaking out. I’m 23, shouldn’t it be going away by now? What can I do to finally get rid of this acne?!

Also, I don’t touch my face or pick at my acne. That’s just going to make it spread. I use a mask twice a week.
You might be drying your skin out too much and it’s kicked into overdrive.
If it’s really bad, you should talk to a dermatologist. My husband has been taking this really strong stuff – Accutane (oral medication) – for about a year and it started clearing up noticeably in six months. It dries the hell out of his skin, but he considers it a fair trade (his acne was terrible when I first met him). The exchange for women is you cannot get pregnant while taking this medication; it has been known to cause birth defects. Being of child-bearing age, you’d need to take a pregnancy test once per month for the clinic’s records. My husband has spoken to a young woman who was also on this medication (I think she’s one of our pharmacists), and she couldn’t be happier with her skin now.
I still have breakouts around my time of the month, still have blackheads on my nose, and sometimes breakout on my body because of fabric irritating my skin. I wouldn’t be a candidate for Accutane, but I’ve learned a lot about it while my husband’s been taking it.
