Can you store photos in a shed outside?
When my dad passed away I took all the photos he had, but I just haven’t had the time to go through them all (and don’t know if I will anytime soon). My ultimate goal is to actually scan all the photos so that I will have digital copies of all the photos as well as the hard copies.
I also have all my old photos as well. So your looking at about 25 photo boxes full of developed pictures between the two of us. Not to mention his photo albums.
My house is small, and I don’t have a lot of storage space. I was thinking about storing only the negatives inside, and storing the actual photos in our shed…but is that guaranteed to ruin them?
I would keep them in the photo boxes, and then put the photo boxes inside a plastic sealed tub. But the shed is not connected to the heater or AC, so during winter and summer I’m wondering if temperatures would ruin the photos.
Does anyone know if this is an okay idea? Or have other suggestions?
Well, there are sheds, and there are sheds. Some sheds are very nice, sturdy, well insulated etc, others are barely better than being outside. I thought one year I would store some Christmas ornaments in what I thought was a decent shed, and I regretted it when I unpacked them the following year.
I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t worry so much about them being cold, but the heat would be a problem. And no matter how well they are sealed, I would worry about dampness managing to seep in. Perhaps if you wrapped them in several layers of plastic bags outside the photobox, then inside a tub…
Especially do not store the albums outside.
It might be a better plan to take a few days off from work and get the scanning done as soon as you can. It will be wonderful going through all your Dad’s photos, so allow more time than you think you need. Best wishes.
