My mother in law is a very dominant lady..she imposes herself like no one i have seen…she lives with me and my wife..she orders both me and my wife around doing household chores…and she makes us massage her feet…she likes parties and expects me to be her chauffeur…once she embarrassed me in public when she ordered me to tie her shoelaces in front of her friends..her towering personality makes me and my wife submit to her all the time..my wife tells me that she has been like this throughout…
We thought of talking to her about it but she is not willing to listen..infact she once slapped me when i tried to be a little assertive..
Your mother in law is a very dominant woman. Why should she change? This has worked for her for years.
Draw up rules and consequences.
Are you and your wife willing to follow through? Can you follow through?
If you are willing to chauffeur her to her parties, do you want a 3-day notice? What if you say no?
If she truly will not listen, I wonder if she has a mental condition, or has so little respect for you and your wife that nothing you say will matter. If this is the case then you need to have her live with one of her many friends and separate yourselves from her.
I know of another dominating woman, a friend of my dad’s. I could only be around her for short periods of time. At her funeral, her son was still bitter about her my-way or the highway attitude 37 years ago, when he moved away from her at age 18.
