Will my porch hold my hot tub?
I have a stone house with a back porch that is an old cistern. It measures about 10′ + 18′ and is approx 6 inches thick. The concrete looks pretty smooth and of good quality. I have recently purchased a 7 person hot tub that holds almost 500 gallons of water. Will I have any trouble with the concrete holding up the weight of my tub?
I’m a structural engineer, and never understimate the massive weight of water! Plenty of 6″ slabs may not be able to support that weight. The only way someone could really tell you is if they knew if the slab was reinforced and to run calculations (by a structural engineer). Now, the other method, which I cannot professionally recommend but is foolproof is to test load with the hot tub full of water and additional weight of occupants (but not with actual people), in a safe manner and be ready for the consequences of failure
