I have a leak behind a plastic 3 piece tub. How do I remove the tub?
Somewhere, there is a leak and I am trying to get to it but I want to remove the panel that has the spout. What are the proper steps to remove that panel without messing it up? I dont want to end up buying a whole new tub. I understand that I have to remove the spout first obviously. I presume that once I am able to remove the panel if possible, that the plumbing will be exposed?
The panels are drywalled in. Demolition is the only way to remove them from the bathroom side. As in removing drywall, then removing the screws/nails holding the surround pieces in place.
You ought to first check to see what is causing the leak. Is it happening when the water is flowing?…the leak is at or above the mixing valve or in the drain connection. Is it constant?…the leak is at or below the mixing valve. Is it sporadic?…the leak may be at the overflow hole or a crack in the tub. Do you have access underneath the tub, like a basement or crawl space? If you do, the drain connection can be seen from there and maybe the overflow one, too.
A much better exploratory method, should you need it, is to cut a hole in the drywall on the other side of the wall, if you have access.
If you’ve narrowed down the likely cause of the leak you can then cut a hole in the appropriate area. If it’s the mixing valve and above, cut a 1′ x 1′ hole, using a drywall saw, with the center at approximately the height of the handle. Save the drywall for the repair. Find the leak and repair.
There are drywall clips that fit the edge of the hole, then you just put the cutout piece back in place and screw it to the clips. Likewise, you can just screw thin pieces of wood, such as base moulding into the edges of the hole, with a lip left to mount the cutout piece. Similarly screw the cutout to the trim and repair using joint compound and tape or mesh.
