I want to use a US made spa in Europe. It runs 220V which is fine, but will the 50 to 60Hz be a problem ?
I am buying a spa in the USA. It is a 220/240V supply which I know is not a problem. I was figuring I could just plug it into a suitably wired and powered European socket and it would be fine. Thinking about it, though, I was wondering whether the frequency difference in supply (50Hz Europe vs 60 Hz US) would be a problem, and if it was – is there any way aropund it (seeing as the spa is already on the way to me !!)
The worst that could happen, is that the Spa Pump may run slightly slower than designed. If flow is a problem, then you can just replace it with a 50hz pump of the same wattage and flow rating as the original (just watch the “start up” current is the same). As most modern Spa’s have digital flow control, it should not be a problem, just turn it up!
American Specifications for Electrical Insulation are as good as, if not better than ours. They are also the originators of the “Claim Culture” so manufacturers are very keen on “User Safety” with regards to manufacturing quality.
Most large manufacturers “Out Source” most of the parts from International suppliers and so compatible alternative parts should not usually be a problem. They also manufacture a range of products for most markets, so you may find spares actually available over here anyway! If yours is from a smaller manufacturer, then they tend to use “Off the Shelf” parts, which usually have a universal fitment. Therefore replacement parts are not a problem.
