Is my solar power system working properly?

We just purchased a home with 34 solar panels on it. The DC Capacity is 5.12kw and they were installed 6 1/2 years ago. I believe the facing is correct (southern exposure) and they don’t have anything blocking them for the majority of the day i’ve been watching and this time of year they get about 10 hours of exposure on a sunny day. They are producing on their best sunny day only 8kw and on cloudy days if i’m lucky 1 or 2 kw. Does this seem correct? I don’t understand the solar power conditioner displays either, there are two of them and when it’s sunny the first one always displays about 2.2 kwh and the second one always shows about 1.3kwh. Is that per hour or what it expects to produce through the day? Please help me to understand do you think it needs repairs? Or is the number reasonable with your experience?

A system that new is unlikely to have any trouble. But it would help if you posted the exact model of your inverter (I think that’s what you called the power conditioner), and the exact text of the numbers you’re seeing, including any labels on or near the display. It would also help to know your exact location.
An important distinction to make is between kilowatts (kW) and kilowatt-hours (kWh). The first is an instantaneous power rating, the second is energy. What the electric company bills you on is energy. At noon, if your array is installed optimally, it should be putting out 4 kW or so. I’m guessing, but it sounds like your array is divided into two strings, each with 17 panels. One side is putting out 2.2 kW (take a look again, it should say kW, not kWh) which is reasonable. The other side, if it’s 1.3 kW, has some problems. You will need a solar installer to come and diagnose the problem, preferably the one that installed the system in the first place. If a panel has gone bad, it should still be under warranty. If the array was professionally installed, in California, there is a requirement of a 10-year warranty.
