How long should it take to pump breastmilk?
I have a 6-week-old, and when I pump (manual pump), it takes about 10 minutes to get an ounce (even when I pump in the morning). I see comments from people who take 15-20 minutes to pump 8 oz, and I’m wondering if that’s because they have older babies who eat more. How long should it take me to pump, and would an electric be much faster?
Most people don’t understand how a pump works and what is normal.
First, every woman responds differently to specific pumps. There are some women who do better with hand expression, and some who do better with electric pumps. In general, a pump is to supply stimulation in the absence of a baby, and the milk is a bonus. In addition, every woman has a different breastmilk capacity. If you have a large breastmilk capacity, you may be able to pump more milk because there is more to begin with. When you double pump, it increases the stimulation (like nursing twins) so you tend, after a while, to get more milk from an increased supply.
With an electric pump, it is generally advisable to pump no more than 15 minutes. With a single pump, split the time you have available in half and do one side, then the other, and then repeat, so each side is being stimulated twice. Again, about 15 minutes per side is fine. And then you get what you get, whether it’s an ounce or three ounces. Remember too, there will be more milk available if you are replacing a feeding than if you are pumping after a feeding, and there is more milk available earlier in the day than later.
