Why a column of mercury in a thermometer first descends slightly and then rises when placed in hot water?
mercury is used to read temperature by its property to expand. when mercury thermometer is dropped in a hot water bowl, the glass bulb surrounding it expans first and then conducting the heat to the mercury inside. so the expansion in glass causes a very slight drop in mercury level. and then mercury rises because of the heat.
