Hurricane Ike! Need Help with Hard Wire of Generator to Home?
Can someone/anybody please send information, comments or suggestions!! I am trying to help my uncle who is still without electricity in Houston, TX. He has a 8000 watt generator. This is what he is trying to do: He has a 10 gauge 30 amp cord and 240 volts that will run through the cord. He was wants to take that cord and plug into the dryer socket in the utility room. He thinks that will give him power to all the electrical socket in the home to operate pretty much everything beside the central air conditioner. Does anyone have any instructions, comments, or information that would be able to help us out here. We are desperate. I just want to make sure that my uncle is doing it correctly. We know to make sure that the BREAKER IS TURNED OFF! Thanks in advance for any help.
if the plug fits into the dryer socket then yes it will work, you would be back feeding your panel, SHUT OFF THE MAIN BREAKER, i mean the main 100 or 150 amp main breaker where it usually comes in from the power company……. shut off all the breakers in your panel and then use the dryer’s breaker which is probably 30 or 40 amps as your new main breaker, then only turn on the other breakers to supply what ever items you need….. DO NOT TURN ON THE MAIN (150 AMP) BREAKER UNTIL YOU REMOVE THE GENERATOR , otherwise you could back feed all the way to the power lines outside and possibly kill a lineman…… your idea will work in a pinch but it’s definitely not code, but because it is considered temporary, you are allowed…..
just get an electrician there asap to make sure you did everything right,
EDIT:::: like trim said… i was wondering if breakers will allow a back feed and if they function the same when back fed.
if not you will have to hard wire the generator through the main breaker, but you will have to tape up the main feed wires from the power co. or go outside and pull the meter out to open the lines coming into the house because you don’t know when they will turn the power back on. they should be taped individually and do not disconnect the ground wire….. just the two main “hot” wires and the neutral…
