Why cant you use a hot tub with a pacemaker/difibulator?
I have a quick question. I want to use a hot tub and I have a pacemaker/difibulator, why cant I use a hot tub. Is it because of the motors? Because I take hot baths. And what if the hot tub pump is a about 7 meters away from the hot tub
You are correct, a hot tub will cause even a normal heart rate to increase. This is noted among younger and older patients. That why you will see warning signs around hot tubs.
A hot tub will have no additional affect on your pacemaker. Feel free to use one. As far as hot tubs/saunas here is the scoop. When in hot tubs/saunas your heart rate and blood pressure start to increase due to the heat. Under these circumstances a patient who is prone to arrhythmia’s
increases their chances of having an arrhythmia. There is no risk to you other than getting a shock should your heart rate increase and you get the arrhythmia. There are several things that you can do to decrease your “chances” of getting a shock.
Hot tub – Don’t go all the way in the water or shift back and forth from sitting in the tub and sitting on the edge of the tub/the stairs of tub to keep your legs in water. This way you won’t get too hot and your body will have a chance to cool down. Drink a lot of cool water while your in the tub.
(Notice I didn’t say cold beer, although tempting, this would not be a good idea as it would increase your chances of getting a shock even more since alcohol heats the body, too.)
You have to be your own judge of how you feel. Your other option is to buy a heart rate monitor. They have some that are just wrist band units, others you strap to your chest. Not that you would have to wear these all the time, but the first few times you could have an idea of the reaction you are
having to the heat and how fast your heart goes. Several people with defibrillators use hot tubs and saunas – you just have to be careful. As long as your doctor is ok with it and you try to limit the amount of time you are in the heat, I think that you should feel free to indulge yourself.
