where should i put the infrared heat lamp in my snake tank?
on the top hanging down, on the side, in the top corner etc

Your bulb shouldn’t actually be IN the tank; unless you have a safety cage with fine mesh around it.
Snakes will strech their whole body up to touch the bulb, and get burnt. The safest place for the bulb would be outside of the cage, in a dome fixture, sitting on top of the screen.
If you have a custom made cage with front opening doors instead of a screen topped cage, the best place would be on the top, pointed down. But, please get or make a safety cage to keep your snake from getting burned.
