why is it more difficult to test for the presence of chlorine in organic compound than in inorganic compounds HCl?
Please give me some answers because I need this in Wednesday (June 29, 2011).
Chlorine in inorganic compounds is almost always ionically bonded and present as the chloride ion for which there is a straightforward test using silver nitrate. In organic compounds chlorine is usually covalently bonded to carbon. There is no simple test for covalently bonded chlorine and some from of pretreatment is necessary in order to convert it to chloride ion. If the chlorine atom is a reactive one this pretreatment may just involve a preliminary hydrolysis but if it is less reactive, it may be necessary to fuse a sample with sodium metal. This is called the Lassaigne test.
