humming noises from breaker box?
I noticed yesterday a humming noise coming from the breaker box and two of the breakers were warm to the touch (hot water heater and hot tub spa) I eventually saw that our hot water heater was leaking and quickly switched those two breakers to off.we got a new hot water heater and are currently working on the piping to stop the leak.my question is,why is it that when I turn the hot tub breaker switch to on,after about a minute I put my hand on the outside of the breaker panel and I can feel a slight vibrating humming noise.is this normal?the breakers are no longer warm,but the noise does concern me.the breaker box and panels are all new and we have double breakers for the spa,one in the main panel box in the house and one outside near the spa.not sure but I believe it is 200 amp breaker box
“humming” from a breaker panel is never a good thing. If the breakers for the spa and the hot water are directly across from each other in the panel, you may have done damage to the panel itself. This is particularly true if your panel has aluminum bus bars (the tabs where the breakers plug into) like those found in the cheap panels that are very common. If this is the case, please email me before replacing any circuit breakers.
I will contradict someone else a little and tell you that having circuit breakers at the panel and near the spa itself is actually quite normal. It is permitted by NEC. It is not a problem. In fact, most spa disconnects, sold as such by manufacturers, are GFI circuit breakers. These are required, by NEC, to be installed between 5 and 20 feet from the tub and within direct sight of the tub. That is why it exists. As long as the breaker(s) in the spa disconnect are the GFI type, you do not need another GFI at the main electrical panel.
