How Often Should A Black Woman Wash Her Hair?
I have fairly long hair (about sixteen inches long) and I have started to do my hair at home. It’s not super kinky and easily detangles when wet and dry (my stylist told me my scalp makes more oil than other scalps she tends to). Whenever I wash my hair at home I use Cream of Nature and Nexxus Moisture Therapy Shampoo, Kiehls Ultra Hydrating Conditioner and Leave-In Conditioner and Silk Elements Heat Protective Spray. I deep condition under a hard hat dryer and comb and section my hair and let it dry under the hard hat dryer. I press the roots with an electric pressing comb (which isnt as hot as a stove comb but gets my roots straight) and then flat iron with an FHI ceramic iron.
Long story short, I heard that women of color should wash every ten days or so. Could I wash that often and not worry about hair breakage because of heat damage?
Please only answer this question if you have experience with African American hair because it is VERY different from other types of hair. Thanks.
Whatever you do just don’t wash with shampoo every day. Your hair is dryer than other hair types and washing every day will strip it of its natural oils. I try to wash my hair every other day or 3 times a week, it depends. If you use shampoos without sulfates, organic shampoos don’t contain them, or wash with a moisturizing shampoo then your hair won’t get as dry as it does with normal shampoo. Sulfates dry out the hair which is why hair becomes very dry after shampooing. Many people don’t even use shampoo because of the dryness. They use homemade ingredients to clean and clarify their hair.
You can use conditioner to wash your hair (called co-wash). Conditioner contains cleansing ingredients and gets your hair reasonably clean by removing the water soluble products, but it can’t remove other ingredients like mineral oils. Conditioner also causes build-up over time so you’ll need to clarify. If you want to completely phase out shampoo from your hair regimine then you can wash with conditioner and when you need completely strip your hair of every thing you can add a little bit of baking soda to your conditioner and this is what gets your hair completely clean. People who co-wash can do this every day and not worry about over drying, plus the conditioner also helps with improving the condition of the hair. If you co-wash then wash once to clean your hair, rinse, add conditioner again to condition the hair.
I use a product called Wen ( http://www.chazdean.com ). This is a no-shampoo line of products. Instead of shampoo it has a cleansing conditioner that gets the hair clean like shampoo but without over drying the hair. It’s also a conditioner/leave-in/deep conditioner all in one. When the cleansing conditioner you can wash your hair every day with it if you wanted. I prefer clean hair so I wash my hair every other day, whether it was with shampoo or with Wen.
If you have heat damage then your hair can break off no matter how often you wash. Those are two seperate issues. I’ve had heat damage before and my hair broke off badly. Start doing hot oil treatments with olive oil to help repair some of the damage and make your hair stronger.
