Why DOES my hot water heater work?
I just noticed that after 7 years of buying my home, my water lines are hooked up backwards to my water heater. My cold inlet is going to the opening marked “hot” and my hot is going to the opening marked “cold”. I obviously dont want to swap the lines after over 7 years of working fine…but this just doesnt seem right.
A water heater is just a pressure vessel it will always flow through the path of least resistance ie open valve. the only difference internally between the hot and cold water inlet is the cold water has a dip tune, a long copper or pvc pipe that deposits the cold water at the bottom of the heater closest to the burner, in your heater it is sucking the water closest to the burner so you are still getting hot water. not the most efficient way but heck if it works!!!
