What the design on the new Burton Custom board means?
On the new Burton Custom snowboard there is a design on the front cover that has a few people on it. One guy looks like an astronaut and the other is parachuting. I’m trying to figure out what they mean.
I haven’t been able to find the new Custom Snowboard graphic you are talking about but if somebody is wearing a jumpsuit and another is parachuting then it’s a good bet that the cover is a reminder that Snowboarding is an extreme sport and there is a LOT of overlap between athletes who do extreme sports.
I’ll admit that I’ll be 55 in May and I only get out on the slopes every couple of years. I’ve only taken a snowboard on a green circle slope once in my life because I get out there so seldom — and that during a blizzard which I have had more experience with so there was nobody else around. I KNOW which risks I can handle. Normally when I snowboard I do so so infrequently I take the to kiddie slopes or snow banks. I am not SUCH an idiot that I will ignore the warnings to stay in control. It’s not JUST that you can get injured like Keven Pearce when you are snowboarding — and yes I know he was practicing jumps — there are still incidents like the case of the lawyer some years back who went to jail for running over and killing a skier. With his board. It was NOT a freak accident. Snowboarding is an extreme sport and most of the resorts I know about do a very good job of welcoming kids with their boards while making sure they don’t endanger everyone. There are exactly twelve-year-olds who I regard as professionals, even if they will never make the Olympics, but again that is the whole point. Snowboarding is an extreme sport. There are soldiers who are involved in it, pilots, and thrill seekers.
Of course Burton, which Jake Carpenter admits he founded in reaction to the new ski equipment of the early sixties — which is safer — is going to acknowledge that its dangerous. And pointing out the connection to these other activities is one way to do so while also pointing out that for some people it can be worth the risk and that they can control it for others.
