Can I use a pool pump to make a hot tubb / spa?
I am looking at designing and building a hot tub , I already have a 0.75 hp pump and sand filtration unit from my pool , what I purpose to do is to use this pump but instead of using the one inlet on the pool I am going to use 3 or four inlets connected in the side and front of the hot tub structure , and Connect them up with pipes (1 1/2 pool pipe ) and T pieces , would this be ok , will it work , or would that cause some sort of back pressure on the pool pump ?
Of course it will work! You will have lots of pressure on the discharge side of the pump going to the jets & that’s not a bad thing esp if you require lots of pressure for massaging bodies!
No doubt the discharge pipes will be jetted through jets in the side of the spa complete with controls above each jet.
At least you should get good filtration & that will be a good thing!
Most spa pumps are either 3/4 HP with motors that run at 2800RPM & some are 1/2HP doing the same revs.
I wouldn’t be too concerned about back pressure, providing all the joints you make are sound & water tight. Remembering of course that the pump will be under a flood suction & if there is too much back pressure then it will only return via the suction at the bottom of the spa. I don’t think you will run into to many problems if you do everything right & make good sound joints.
As a piece of information; include a self draining tap in the suction line before the pump to ease of draining the tub, without the running of the pump to empty.
Note I have read where people have left the pump un attended trying to empty the tub & done damage to the pump, but by installing a tap or valve as I would term it before the pump on a tee, going to waste or a drain.
Most spa & swimming pool pumps are constructed of a type of plastic (noryl) And when there is very little water left within the pump body, it boils through friction & in turn disintegrates the pump body & impeller etc.Leaving the owner with a horrendous repair cost!
