I plugged in my portable hear for about 2 hours. When I unplugged, the prongs themselves were too hot to touch
I have never had this happed, does this mean there is something wrong with the heater or with the outlet. How can I check? Is this a fire hazard?
Yes, it could be a fire hazard. You should get it checked as soon as possible.
It sounds like there might be a problem with the wall outlet to me. If the contacts in the wall outlet have lost some of their spring they won’t make as solid a contact when something is plugged in. With small loads it wouldn’t make much difference but with a big load like a heater it could easily cause the overheating you have described. How easily does something plug into this outlet? Can you feel the resistance of the spring contacts when pushing the plug in? Does it wiggle around very easy or even kind of sag in the socket? If the plug doesn’t feel fairly tight I’d replace the outlet.
There may be a problem with the wiring at the plug on the end of the heater cord. You could have the plug or the whole cord on heater replaced but depending on the cost of the heater it may be cheaper to buy a new one if that seems to be the problem.
