My Honda 84 Nighthawk 700 has ticks.?
This is making me crazy. There is a metalic ticking sound coming from the top end camshaft area.. But the weird thing is that it goes away after it gets hot. And some days it doesn’t do it at all. It also varies in volume from a clacking to a clicking to a ticking. I have had mechanics check it over, have replaced all 16 valves, and still it comes and goes. It doesn’t seem to affect the performance, but with all the money I’ve thrown at it, it makes me crazy. Has anyone had this experience? Got any ideas? Perhaps a defoamer hydraulic lifter thing? Have tried many viscosities of oil, always keep it fresh,etc. I bought and restored this bike nine years ago and it is definitly my baby. Don’t want to give it up. Help!
you had better check your oil pressure – pump system. i had one of these bikes for a while – never had any noise from it. my rcollection of the system is that they are NOT hydraulic lifters in the usual sense – but they are hydraulic lash take up adjusters. so – the oil pressure is supposed to make the lash take up to zero to run line to line and with out noise. sounds to me like your bike has an oil pressure regulation problem that is making the lifters not work. replacing valves – or lifters won’t help if the oil pressure is wrong.
