How do you hook up a hot tub?
I have a Cal Spa that is one year old, given to me by a family member. It is a 220 volt direct hook up (no plug like a dryer). I went to Lowe’s and got a 220 breaker with GFI attached, enough wire, and poly conduit for the outside wiring. I understand that the wiring needs to run from my electrical panel, to the break/GFI, to the tub. But I have never messed around behind my panel and am not sure what to do. I know I need to cut the electric to my house prior. I have had two electricians quote over $1000 to wire it, I only paid $200 for the parts. Do I need to test voltage prior? Any chance of over loading the electrical box causing fire?
You might really want to hire someone if you are not that experienced with electrical. The reason for this is that if you mess up with the grounds it could be slightly hazardous to you. If you feel comfortable with running this, then you may do it yourself.
You are going to run into some issues of running the line. How far from your panel do you have to go? Will the line need to go underground? Will it need to be in conduit? Are you using the right kind of cable? Electrical wires have ratings and types. Do you know what THHN means? Are you sure you want to do this?
Is is not that hard of a concept. Three to four wires will need to be ran to the outlet for the devise. Two of the lines will be hot conductors and one will be the grounded conductor. You might have a neutral if it calls for one. This will determine the cable you purchase if you are running a cable. If you run conduit you can just pull wire.
Are you comfortable with this installation, or do you thing you should hire someone? There is a reason the electrical trade is a five year apprenticeship.
I also just read that it is a direct hook up. You may need to put a disconnect by the hot tube in the case of an emergency. I don’t think too many professionals would do otherwise.
