remodeling negotiation?
Just bought a home built in the 50s, need to remodel very out-dated and badly laid-out bathroom. Need to relocate toilet and tub, installing jacuzzi tub, destroying a linen closet, build another one on the other side, and relocate a window. The guy quoted me $15K total all inclusive of tub, fixtures, lighting, etc. I know it will end up costing more than $15K because his allowance for fixtures is very little and I know I want nicer quality fixtures. Should I negotiate? If so, how much lower should I start with? What leverage do I use to negotiate a lower price? I’ve gotten quotes from several companies and he’s price is middle of the road. I liked this guy the best, personal gut feeling. Inexperienced in negotiating, please help.
Yes, I would get a written quote if you do not have one and just let him know that you like him the best out of the contractors that you talked to but a couple of others had lower quotes. Be honest and tell him your concerns about wanting quality fixtures. Let him know that you would prefer to do your business with him but would like to discuss his labor costs, a little bit more, before making that decision and then say no more. Do not say anything. If he speaks next, then that tells you that he will work with you. If he wants your business then he will be a little flexible, but realize too, that he also is doing this to make a living.
