Is my GPU hot?
i am running a 8600GT in a dell standard case. Not very good ventilation. its factory overclocked at 576/730. why on idle is it running at 52c. and in Ntune i try to turn the fan up but im afraid to because its on autmatic now but it sais automatic fan speed is like 61,354,699.94%. that meens nothying to me when direct fan control gives me an option of 1-100% fan speed. i do not know what to do? what should i turn the fan upto and what is it running on at automatic fan speed? very confused!
are you talking about a PCI – Express card added into the dell case? If so, does this Video card have a fan already on it or is it passively cooled (heatsink only) such as mine?
If heatsinked only, you can purchase what is called a slot fan which mounts directly next to the card and will help cool it. Do not use this method if card already has a fan as it will create an opposite intended reaction.
If this is an “embedded” vid chip on the motherboard, in automatic mode the fan is set to speed up and slow down according to temperature of the GPU. If you are worried about not cooling enough, shut off automatic mode and manually set it to high or full. This will not hurt the fan. It may not last as long as it would in energy save mode but they are easy to purchase and not that expensive. Most are designed to last many long hours (year or two) anyway. Make sure you keep fan clear of dust and debris for maximum cooling and lifespan.
