need help with a chocolate lab puppy afraid of water,, tub, hose, pool,, streams, beach, HELP please.!?
We have had him since pup no trauma,, it is just unreal that it is happening,, we cant even get him to enjoy himself, and its unreal for us,, Please, my husband , myself, and daughter all need your help,, He is very heavy and really big to be thrown in or even dragged in,, this included the kiddie pool we got him and not to mention the inside bathtub,,,, He is afraid of everything,, garbage cans,, new things that come into house, snowmen,, I think you get the picture,, why and please help… A lab is a natural for water, I thought most if not all dogs were.. At least all the ones we have always owned pure and mutts…
Well, most Labs DO love water … but yours obviously has other ideas.
Don’t FORCE him! Hopefully he will come around, but forcing him into a situation that clearly terrifies him just makes him that much more frightened.
As far as new people, situations, loud noises, trash cans, etc … some of that is normal. Dogs are quick to understand what is the “norm” … and rely on what they already know to help them determine whether something “new” is OK or not.
If your dog’s experience of trash cans is that they stand upright and stay still, a trash can on its side and rolling in the driveway is NOT OK with him. (Mine reacted with terror the first time he saw that happen!)
And snowmen … well, had your dog ever seen a snowman before?
Make sure you take your dog out as much as you can … expose him to all kinds of situations, people, noises. But don’t force him to approach anything that frightens him at first. Let him look at it and talk sweet to him. Encourage him. If he shows an interest, let him approach and investigate. If not, try another time.
My dog was frightened of water as a puppy, but now he’ll happily dive into anything wet. Yours will probably outgrow his fear, but in the meantime, don’t make an issue of it.
