hot tub: using floating bromine dispenser and solar blanket?
I just recently purchased a house that came with an outdoor hot tub. I live in MA so it’s already getting pretty cold at night so I was looking for anything I can do to help maintain the water temparture and cut down on electric bill. I was hoping to get a floating solar blanket in order to help protect the hard cover and to keep more heat in. First of all is this worth it? I have read some people say it makes a big difference but others have said not to bother. I currently use a floating bromine dispenser and I was wondering if having the floating cover on top of the dispenser would prevent the chemicals from being dispersed correctly? Any advice you have would be much appreciated.
First, the solar cover is a waste of time and money. It needs direct solar exposure, the differential temperature is such that you will lose far more heat than you can gain for the exposed area, and your existing top is a far better insulator.
Second, a floating bromine dispenser acts by controlling the dissolution of the tablets in the water by limiting the amount of water exposed to the tablets. Cover on/cover off makes no difference.
Side note – and only a matter of choice: We prefer to use chlorine vs. bromine as the hot-tub at our summer house is on a pristine trout stream. Bromine is a persistent chemical that slightly less active than chlorine and also does not evaporate (outgas) as quickly. So, were we to have a spill or leak, that chemical would likely reach the creek, chlorine would not.
We use a lower concentration of chlorine for the same sanitizing results so the cost differential is negligible.
