How much would it cost to heat an in ground pool in the winter?
I am thinking of putting in a pool, about 16 X 32 in size, 3 feet on the shallow end, 9 feet on the deep end. This is in the Catskills, upstate New York. Temperatures in the winter here can drop into the teens. What I want to do is keep the pool operational during the winter, but keep the temperature at about 60 degrees. I will need some kind of a thermal cover to keep the heat from dissipating, and insulate the walls as much as possible. Maybe even order a custom oversized foam cover, like they put on hot tubs, with hinges on one side of the pool and an automatic raising mechanism that will pull it up.
What would it cost to keep the heat at 60 degrees given that setup, lets say in gallons of propane?
I welcome any ideas (inclulding criticism)

A 16 x 32 inground pool would require at least a 250,000 btu pool heater. If you are going to try and keep your pool at 60°F in temperatures that cold I would recommend you use a 325,000 or maybe even a 400,000 btu heater.
100,000 btu’s will burn roughly 1 gallon of propane in 1 hour. So let’s use the 325K btu heater for this example. Every hour that the heater runs you are going to be using 3-¼ gallons of propane.
500 gallons ÷ 3.25 gph = 150 hours. SO you will use up a 500 gallon tank of propane every 150 hours of heater operation. I think in those temperatures it is easily going to run 50% of the time or 12 hours per day. At that rate you are going to be filling up a 500 gallon tank every 12 days. I don’t know what propane costs in that area…but let’s say $2 per gallon…thats going to be $1000 every other week.
There is a lot of “ifs” in that answer and I think I was being conservative in my numbers. I sell propane and apppliances. I always make sure people who want a pool heater fully understand just how expensive they are to operate. If you look at an average furnace in a home, they are about 90,000 btu’s. Well this pool heater is like running 3 furnaces!
If you are that serious about keeping it operational, I would suggest you put a building around it and heat and insulate that!
Reading between the lines it sounds like you don’t want to go through the expense and hassle of closing in the fall and opening the pool again in the spring. but this method is going to cost you big bucks to save comparably few pennies.
