What’s the purpose of putting a test tube in a hot water bath?
We made esters for a lab but I don’t understand why we have to put the test tube with caboxylic acids and alcohols in a hot water bath.
why does it need to be 65 degrees celsius?
to speed up the reaction.
most esters are flammable and volatile so you would not want to heat them over any flame unless you wanted to risk a fire or explosion.
a water bath can be used to control the temperature more accurately. 65 C is a fairly specific temperature.
65C is probably needed to provide the specific heat of formation needed to catalyze the reaction.
often a higher temp can cause the reaction product to decompose and you then do not get the desired results.
