6 month old wheezing and albuterol doesn’t seem to be helping…?
On Friday night, my 6 month old little boy started coughing and wheezing. When I called the doctor on Saturday morning, they said because he had no fever and was so young, there was nothing we could do except vaporizers. However, after several days the wheezing seemed to be getting worse not better, so I went ahead and took him to his pediatrician. They said he has an upper respiratory infection (virus) and prescribed albuterol to help with the wheezing. He has had 3 doses so far, and I do not notice any improvement (if anything, after he takes the medicine it seems like the wheezing gets worse). I’ve got vaporizors going everywhere, and am taking him into the bathroom and running a hot shower for steam several times a day, and patting his back and massaging his chest. My question is how long does it typically take for the lungs to clear up once treatment has started. I’m thinking if he still doesn’t seem any better in another day, I’m going to take him back to the doctor?
As someone has pointed out there is a good chance that your child might not be getting the proper dose. Ideally nebulised salbutamol (Albuterol) is the best method for delivery for young ones. I would recommend going back to the Doctor or even better going straight to emergency. If there is a Hx of asthma in the family ie you or the babies father then there is a chance he maybe having an asthma attack which will need anti-inflammatory drugs.
