How do I hang backerboard and tile around a cast iron tub when it has the lip around the top of it?
I am remodeling the bathroom and stripping it down exept for the cast iron tub. I noticed around the top of the tub is a lip. If I lay backerboard around it and attach it to the studs and then put tile on it, it still doesnt clear the lip around the tub?? do I have to use shims on every stud in the bathroom to make the walls come out?
Your walls should measure 5’1″ from stud to stud. The tub should measure 5′ exactly. The backer board should be 1/2″ thick. This will allow for the last row of tiles to fall inside the lip of the tub. As for the backer board, it does not matter whether it falls into the lip or just outside the lip. If you do have to strip out a wall to make things work correctly, strip out just one wall, preferably the wall opposite the drain. It is easier to strip out that wall. You must strip out the entire length of the wall, not just in the area of the tub.
