Just bought a hot tub, questions about the chemicals I need to put in it…Mixing Chlorine and Bromine?
I bought liquid chlorine to “shock” the water… the active ingredient is sodium hypochlorite. I probably put about 1.5 ounces into a 210 gallon tub.
I recently bought a brominator, and bromine tablets for on going maintenance. Everything I am reading says never to mix the two…. Do I need to empty my tub and fill it back up with clean water then add the brominator? Will there really be an explosion if I mix the two? Any advice on spa chemicals would be greatly appreciated!
Well moving forward I want to use bromine. The issue is the hot tub has some chlorine in it currently. What do I do?
There is no need to empty the hot tub and there will not be any explosion. If you have already heated up the tub, the heat from the hot tub water will very quickly evaporate the chlorine out of the water. That’s why chlorine is not used in hot tubs/spa’s is because of that reason.
As the chlorine evaporates it give of strong fumes that can make you feel unwell and irritate your eyes if you are in the hot tub. Bromine takes a longer time to evaporate therefore it has very low fumes and keeps the water sanitized a lot longer.
Keep your hot tub running for about 6 hours with the heater on so the chlorine evaporates quickly after that you can use your spa. Make sure you have all the right chemicals handy to keep your pH levels balanced. If you don’t have one already go and buy a pool water test kit and test the water regularly and empty the hot tub about every 3 months and fill with fresh water.
The chemicals I use in my spa are:
pH decreaser use Sodium Bisulfate. (Don’t use Hydrochloric acid also known as Muriatic acid as it’s too strong for use in a small amount of water.)
pH increaser use Sodium Carbonate
Bromine
It’s ok to use Chlorine to shock your hot tub, just keep in mind Chlorine is a fast acting short-lived chemical when used in hot water.
