Hot tub C/B Trips instantly?
I have a 5 or 6 year old hot springs hot tub. About a week ago I bought it from a gentleman that said his dog chewed off the cord and the tub hasn’t been on for 2 years. when I pulled the electrical box the heater control panel was burnt up so I ordered a new one and installed it. the hot tub is running on a 115v 20 amp ground fault circuit breaker. Every time I flip the c/b it trips instantly. I went through and one by one disconnected the piece parts (pump, heater, filter, ect…) until they were all disconnected. When this didn’t narrow down the problem I I disconnected the the black jumper wire that goes from the heater circuit panel to the main control circuit panel and flipped the c/b and it stayed on. as soon as I hooked the black wire back up it popped again. I have replaced the ground fault circuit breaker hoping that I just got a bad c/b but that was not the case. Any help you can give me would be very much appreciated.
Many hottubs that I have wired require a larger breaker that that. I’m glad you have it on a ground fault breaker. Check the power lable to see what voltage and amps it uses. Be sure to have a ground rod at the hottub as well, grounded straight to the unit, with the ground wire coming from the breaker box. It worries me a little that your breaker trips instantly, If your heater is failing to ground, even 5 milli amps should trip a ground fault device. If you need to correct your power supply to the hottub and the new breaker, if needed, still trips then you should check the wiring and components, or have it checked for a ground fault.
